SD Card Maintenance - Format Your Card for Optimal Performance

  1. Most dash camera manufacturers recommend you format your memory card every one or two weeks to keep the card writing optimally. If you are having problems recording where it previously ran smoothly this could be an easy fix for your issues.

There's a formatting program the SD Association created (The organization in charge of the SD Card format) to optimize your SD card for best performance.
Technical Reasons for Formatting Your Card
First off straight from the associations website:
Quote:The SD Formatter was created specifically for memory cards using the SD/SDHC/SDXC standards. It is strongly recommended to use the SD Formatter instead of formatting utilities provided with operating systems that format various types of storage media. Using generic formatting utilities may result in less than optimal performance for your memory cards.
Secondly a more technical explanation I found for the SD cards file structure:
Quote:The other gotcha you should be aware of is that SD cards are formatted and written to in a slightly "weird" way. An unformatted/blank SD card is actually full of 1's and when you write to it it just flips the appropriate bits to 0. An sd card can read at the bit level but only writes at a block level so you'll end up with areas that can't be used for writing any more as they need to reverse a bit back from a 1 to a 0 to perform the write and deleting/erasing the file won't actually free up all that space as it spans several blocks

  2. Yes choosing a stable and high speed SD card is rather important for a dash camera, for some brand you might need to format the SD card initially before installation.
